round brilliand diamond cutThe most popular diamond cut worldwide is the round diamond cut. Over the centuries it has been proven that this cut has the potential for the highest degree of light return. Therefore 80 percent of diamond sales are round brilliant cut diamonds. It has 57 facets ( or 58, including a culet) and takes a longer cutting time than other cuts. Mostly, they are cut from small crystals and octahedron crystals.  It was the Belgian diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky who gave in 1919 the diamond industry the renowned ideal diamond cut: the Tolkowsky cut or the round brilliant diamond.

Types of round brilliant diamonds

The proportions of the round brilliant diamonds are not fixed (in contrary to the number of facets). In total 6 different ideal round cuts exist:

The American ideal cut or the Tolkowsky cut

The Tolkowsky cut is the best known round diamond cut. It must have:

  • 59 % depth percentage
  • 53 % table percentage
  • 16 % crown height
  • 40.75 degrees pavilion ange
  • 34.5 degrees crown ange
  • 43.1 % pavilion depth

The European Practical Fine cut or Eppler cut

This cut is discovered in 1939 and is the standard in European countries. It is slightly different from the Tolkowsky cut:

  • 56 % table percentage
  • 14.4 % crown height
  • 57.7 % overall height

The Sacandinavian Diamond Nomenclature or ScanDN

  • 57.5 % table percentage
  • 14.6 % crown height
  • 57.5 % overall height

Other round diamond cuts

Other cuts are the ideal brilliant cut, the Parker Brilliant Cut and the Eulitz Brilliant cut.
