Heart of the Ocean Diamond in the Titanic

The Titanic is back or in the movie theaters it is at least. The drama of the original Titanic will now unfold in 3D making one of the most popular movies ever to be made even more heartfelt and sincere. I believe you’re all familiar with the love story of the movie, but how about the driving force of the movie: the Heart of the Ocean Diamond also known as Le Cœur de la Mer?

Heart of the ocean diamond | Hope Diamond

The Heart of the Ocean diamond is in fact a fictional diamond, there never was a real version in existence. Its history however is clearly similar to that of the Hope Diamond. The Hope Diamond was owned by Louis XIV and worn as a royal necklace, while the Heart of the Ocean Diamond is told to have belonged to Louis XVI and worn as a crown.

A piece of movie history

The diamond necklace that is seen in the Titanic is of course no real diamond. It’s a cubic zirconia set in white gold. This piece of movie history was made at the cost of a mere $10.000, not even close to the value of a ‘real’ Heart of the Ocean of course. The original piece used in the movie is still kept in the archives of Twentieth Century Fox.

Reproductions of the Heart of the Ocean

The popularity of the Titanic of course asked for reproductions of this blue diamond necklace. There are two impressive examples that we’d like to take a closer look at. The first one was donated to Sotheby’s charity auction. It was a 171 carat sapphire shaped like a hearth flanked by 103 diamonds set in a platinum necklace; it was sold for $2.2 million to an unknown collector. Celine Dion did get the honor of wearing this beautiful piece at the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony (Oscars).

The famous jeweler Harry Winston (known for having owned the Hope Diamond, Briolette of India and many other famous diamonds) made his own take on the Heart of the Ocean Diamond using a real blue diamond (15 carat). This piece is worth 10 times as much as the previous example valued at $20 million. It was also worn at the 1998 Academy Awards by Gloria Stuart, the actress playing the elder version of Rose.

We do have to admit a blue diamond necklace isn’t easy to come by, but sapphire jewelry has a similar feel and looks at least as mysterious!
