The word carat refers to a weight when we're talking about diamonds, 1 carat is exactly 0.2 gram. It can be pretty confusing since gold in jewelry is also noted in carat, where the word refers to a unit of purity for gold alloys. There are two popular processes for creating synthetic diamonds: HPHT & CVD diamonds. HPHT is an abbreviation for the diamonds created by the process known as High Pressure – High Temperature synthesis. CVD diamonds are created by Chemical Vapour Deposition.

The supply of diamonds is quite steady, although there are some possibilities on the horizon in the form of synthetic diamonds. The demand for diamonds on the other hand is booming by growing countries like China and India.

Some people have nearly everything, but one thing only one person in the world has right now is the world's largest cut emerald. This huge gemstone named Theodora (God's gift) weighs in at 57.500 carats, which equals 25 pounds or 11,5 kilo and will be up for auction on January 28.

The origins of the emerald are a bit of a mystery, but we're told it was mined in Brazil and cut in India. The company that mined it is for now still unknown, ir's said to be a smaller mining company.

The Belgian diamond sector is an engine for the Belgian economy.  Last year, diamonds were accounted for more than 5 percent of total Belgian exports. These exceptional results underline once again the importance of the Antwerp diamond sector.
