The word carat is of extreme importance in the world of jewellery, but when we’re talking about the world of diamond jewellery it has a double meaning. Both gold and diamonds are valued with carats/Karats, but the meaning is quite different.

When we’re talking about gold, Karat refers to the purity of the precious metal. A 24-Karat ring is made of nearly 100% gold, while 18-Karat gold is made of 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal.
